Memlûk Sultanı I. Baybars, İslam dünyasının Moğol ve Haçlı saldırıları karşısında zor duruma düştüğü günlerde hüküm sürmüş bir sultandır. Hal böyleyken hem Haçlılara hem de Moğollara karşı galibiyetler kazanarak, yeni kurulmuş olan devletini ayakta tutmak zorunda olması, O’nu tarihin en önemli şahsiyetlerinden biri haline getirecek galibiyetlerinin de kaynağı olmuştur.

Sultan Baybars, İslam topraklarını Haçlılardan tamamen temizlemek için sadece askeri başarının yeterli olmayacağının farkında olduğundan hüküm sürdüğü süre zarfında diplomatik adımlara da önem vermiştir. Baybars döneminde yapılan anlaşmalar incelendiğinde bu durum açıkça görülebilmektedir. Baybars, Haçlılar ile yakın temasta bulunurken özellikle Akdeniz ticareti konusuna da önem vermekteydi. Bundan dolayı barış anlaşmalarında ticari konulara da yer veren Sultan, vergi imtiyazları sağlayarak Memlûk devletinin Akdeniz ticaretinden gerekli payı alması için çaba gösteriyordu.

Hospital tarikatı, Amalfililer tarafından Kudüs’e giden hacıları koruyan şövalyeler olarak ortaya çıkmış ve Kudüs Haçlı Krallığı’nın kendilerine verdiği topraklara yerleşerek zamanla kiliseye dayalı şövalyelik kurumu haline gelmişlerdir. Hospital şövalyelerinin Haçlılar arasında zamanla ayrı bir yer edinmesi, Baybars’ın onlara karşı izleyeceği siyaseti de ayrı olarak ele almasını gerekli kılmıştır. Çalışmamızda Sultan’ın Hospital şövalyeleri ile ilişkileri izaha çalışılacak ve 1267 ve 1271 tarihli iki anlaşmanın hükümleri verilecektir. Anlaşma hükümleri ile Baybars’ın şövalyelere karşı uyguladığı siyaseti de açıklanacaktır.

Mamluk Sultan Baybars is a sultan who ruled in the days when the Islamic world was in a difficult situation against the Mongol and Crusader attacks. In this case, the fact that he had to keep his newly established state alive by winning victories against both the Crusaders and the Mongols was also the source of his victories that would make him one of the most important figures in history.

Sultan Baybars also gave importance to diplomatic steps during his reign, as he was aware that military success alone would not be enough to completely clear the Islamic lands from the Crusaders. This situation can be clearly seen when the agreements made during the Baybars period are examined. While Baybars was in close contact with the Crusaders, he also gave importance to the Mediterranean trade. For this reason, the Sultan, who also included commercial issues in the peace agreements, was making efforts for the Mamluk state to get the necessary share from the Mediterranean trade by providing tax concessions.

Hospital sect emerged as knights protecting the pilgrims going to Jerusalem by the Amalfis and settled in the lands given to them by the Crusader Kingdom of Jerusalem, and over time they became a church-based knighthood institution. The Hospital knights' gaining a separate place among the Crusaders over time required Baybars to consider the policy he would follow against them separately. In our study, the relations of the Sultan with the Knights of the Hospital will be tried to be explained and the provisions of the two agreements dated 1267 and 1271 will be given. The terms of the agreement and the policy of Baybars against the knights will also be explained.
