Besides the emperor and kings, people of many different identities participated in the crusade that followed the recapture of Jerusalem by the Muslims on 2 October 1187. However after Saladin’s victory at Hıttin, the conquest movement launched against the settlements left in the hands of the Crusaders seemed to be successful before those who set out from Europe reached the region. But at that time, Conrad of Montferrat, who was aboard an Italian ship that arrived on the Syrian coast from Istanbul, took over the city of Tyre, disrupting the Sultan's promised conquest movement. This allowed time to be gained, which was the most necessary thing for the Crusaders. As a matter of fact, the siege of Acre was successfully concluded with the help of Guy of Lusignan and thus the foundations of the Second Kingdom Period, which would last for about a hundred years, were laid in the region.

In this article, the life of Conrad of Montferrat, the main architect of the second period of the Crusader Kingdom of Jerusalem, which will continue to be the center of Acre; Italy, the capital of Byzantium, Istanbul, and then its role in the Muslim-Crusader struggles in the Middle East will be discussed.
