When interpreting attitudes towards the nature of witchcraft in the seventeenth century, the first thing to say is that almost no one disputed whether or not witches existed. The existence of witches was not disputed, central to the controversy was whether there was demonic interference in witches' activities. In this context, the main topic of discussion was Satan, who was seen as an ally of witches. The witchcraft judicial mechanism was closely related to the demonic content attributed to witchcraft. The previously acknowledged innate capacity of witches to exert supernatural effects on natural phenomena was linked to their believed relationship with Satan by the law of 1604 (Witchcraft Act). The argument of this study is that if this were not the case, the activities of witches would probably be considered a social crime, but with this element it has also become a religious crime. This argument will be exemplified by the debates around this issue in the seventeenth century.
