St. John (Hospitalier) Tarikatı, Doğu’da ticari faaliyetler yürüten Batılı tüccarların ve hac ibadeti için Kudüs’e gelen Hristiyan hacıların sağlık, iaşe ve konaklama ihtiyaçlarını karşılamak amacıyla, on birinci yüzyılın ikinci yarısında Amalfili tüccarlar tarafından kurulan bir hayır kurumuydu. Tarikat, kurulduğu tarihten, 1099 yılına kadar bölgesel vasıflı bir kurum olarak bu amaca hizmet etti. 1099’da Kudüs Haçlı Krallığı’nın kurulmasıyla birlikte bölgede oluşan şartlar, tarikatın gelişmesini ve ilk kurumdan bağımsız olarak yeniden yapılanmasını kaçınılmaz kıldı. Tarikatın bu yöndeki teşebbüsleri, bölgede böyle bir oluşumun varlığına ihtiyaç duyan dinî ve siyasî otoriteler tarafından destek gördü. Tarikat, elde ettiği bu destekle, yapılanmasını daha kurumsal bir zemine taşımak ve daha geniş kesimler tarafından tanınan uluslararası bir yapı haline gelmek amacıyla birtakım girişimlerde bulundu. Papalık tarafından tanınan resmi bir tarikat statüsü elde etmek ve bağımsız bir kurum olarak iç işleyişine yön verecek bir tüzük metnine sahip olmak, bu girişimlerin önemli sonuçları arasında yer almaktaydı.

Bu çalışmada, Papa II. Paschalis tarafından yayınlanan Pie postulatio voluntatis adlı ferman (bull) ve Üstat Raymond du Puy döneminde oluşturulan tüzük metninden hareketle, St. John Tarikatı’nın erken dönem yapılanma faaliyetleri ve iç işleyişi konu edinilecektir. Çalışma, tarikatın kuruluşu hakkında bilgi veren temel kaynaklar ve çağdaş eserler ışığında şekillenecektir.

St. John's (Hospitalier) Order was charitable organization founded by Amalfi merchants in the second half of the eleventh century to meet the health, subsistence and accommodation needs of Western merchants conducting commercial activities in the East and Christian pilgrims coming to Jerusalem for pilgrimage. The order served this purpose as a regionally qualified institution from the date of its establishment until 1099. Forming of the Crusader Kingdom of Jerusalem in 1099, inevitably caused to development of the Order and its restructuring discontinuously from the first Institution. The attempts of the order in this direction were supported by the religious and political authorities who needed the existence of such a formation in the region. With this support, the order made some initiatives in order to move its structuring to a more institutional basis and to become an international structure that is recognized by wider regions. Obtaining an official order status recognized by the Papacy and having rules that would direct its internal functioning as an independent institution were among the important results of these initiatives.

In this study, based on the edict (bull) named Pie postulatio voluntatis published by Pope Paschalis II and the statutes created during the period of Master Raymond du Puy,  the early structuring activities and inner workings of the Order of St. John will be discussed. The study will be shaped in the light of main sources and contemporary works that give information about the establishment of the order
