Pronoia Kurumu, Thema sisteminin zayıflaması sonucunda 11. Yüzyılın ortalarından itibaren Bizans İmparatorluğunda ortaya çıkmıştır. Sivil ve daha çok askeri hizmetler karşılığında verilen geliri, hibeyi ifade etmektedir. Pronoia ile bireye verilen araziler kalıcı değildir. I. Aleksios tahta geçtiği ilk yıllarda merkezi otoriteyi güçlendirmek amacıyla bağlılığını bildiren kişilere ve çoğunlukla yakın çevresine Pronoia arazisi vermekteydi. Pronoia arazileri, Komnenos hanedanı döneminde ilerleyen yüzyıllarda savunma sistemini güçlendirmek amacıyla askeri hizmet karşılığında Stratiotes adındaki asker köylülere verilmeye başlandı. Paleologos hanedanı döneminde ise miras olarak devredilebilir hale gelmiş ve arazi sahipleri yarı bağımsız otorite figürü olmaya başlamışlardır. The Pronoia institution emerged in the Byzantine Empire from the middle of the 11th century as a result of the weakening of the Thema system. It refers to the income and grant given in return for civil and mostly military services. The lands given to the individual with Pronoia are not permanent. In the first years of his accession to the throne, Alexios I Komnenos gave pronoia land to those who declared his loyalty and mostly to his immediate surroundings in order to strengthen the central authority. Pronoia lands, began to be given to soldier peasants named Stratiotes in return for military service in order to strengthen the defense system in the following centuries during the Komnenos Dynasty. These lands became transferable as inheritance during the Paleologos Dynasty and the landowners became semi-independent authority figures. In this article, the concept of Pronoia, the change and transformation of the institution of Pronoia for centuries, and its relationship with the Tımar system will be discussed.
